MFA | Visual Arts
The MFA program at Claremont Graduate University begins with the conviction that art is an enterprise that is intimately linked to the individuals who make it, often in ways that are not yet known to themselves or others. Our two-year program is studio-based and graduate-only, allowing each candidate to create a customized course of study that includes one-on-one meetings with internationally recognized faculty whose own work is original and interdisciplinary as well as seminars, tutorials, critiques, and workshops. Individual studios, solo graduate exhibitions, teaching assistantships, and student-governance make for an environment that stimulates independent thinking and rewards initiative.
CGU is one of the seven members of the Claremont Consortium, which includes the five Claremont Colleges (Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, Pomona, and Scripps) as well as the Keck Graduate Institute. The faculty, facilities and resources of these world-class institutions are available to MFA students.
CGU’s students also actively participate in the cultural life of Southern California. Located 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, the art department provides access to an art scene unmatched by any other.
