GIS Overview
Increasingly, organizations in the United States and around the world are using geographic mapping, location-based services, and related geospatial technologies in innovative ways that promise to transform what they do and how they do it. This transformative use of geographic information system (GIS) technologies poses challenges far beyond those associated with fundamental GIS activities such as visual and spatial analysis. Claremont Graduate University’s Center for Information Systems and Technology (CISAT) conducts research and graduate education at the forefront of this innovative field
CISAT’s GIS focus includes research in a variety of topic areas, such as health, transportation, and humanitarian relief. The GIS solution development concentration is part of the Masters of Information Systems and Technology (MSIST) degree program, which covers the entire body of knowledge in cutting-edge technologies needed for students wishing to become information systems and technology professionals. The most recent development at CISAT is the establishment of an Advanced GIS Lab, aimed at stimulating GIS analysis and solutions through partnerships with ESRI and others. One major activity undertaken by the lab is leading a Student GIS Challenge Contest in support of GIS Day (2011).
