Dear Members of our Student Community:

I’d like to welcome you to Claremont Graduate University. Whether you are a new or continuing student, it is both a pleasure and honor to serve as your Dean of Students and Vice Provost for Student and Enrollment Services. Providing quality services that support your academic pursuits is at the core of what our offices do. Our ultimate goal is your success—in your graduate studies, and then in your career thereafter.

Although I am writing today as your Dean, I’ve been a member of the CGU community for over 19 years, as both a professor and dean for the School of Arts and Humanities and, in recent years, as an associate provost for both academic planning and enrollment management. My experiences both in and outside the classroom have given me great insight into the workings of this university and the needs of its student population. Well aware that graduate student life is demanding, I strongly encourage you to have an open dialogue with me and all the members of our student services team—ask questions, share issues, and take advantage of all the services we have to offer. Those services run the gamut: from administrative (admission, financial aid, registration, and student accounts) to professional (career management, the Writing Center, and Preparing Future Faculty) to more personal (religious life, mental and physical health services). The combination of all of these essential support services helps you maintain balance and optimal performance. Whether you have received such support in the past or feel that you are only now in need, we encourage you to build relationships with those on our staff who are trained and ready to help.

I’d like to personally thank you for choosing CGU, a very special institution with almost a century of graduate-only education. I hope that all your experiences here in Claremont and the metro Los Angeles area will positively reinforce the important decision you have made to join us. As the weeks and months progress, I hope to get to know many of you by name—and, in turn, I want you to know that I will always be an advocate for your success.

Best wishes,

Patricia Easton

Associate Dean of Student Services

I, too, want to welcome you to CGU.  In my role as Associate Dean of Student Services, I work closely with Dean Easton to help lend support and ensure your success while here. One of my primary roles is to head the recently established Student Success Center (SSC), which brings together various CGU programs and services under 'one roof.' The SSC provides students with an intellectually and stimulating supportive environment, offering an array of services that enhance the graduate student experience at CGU by developing the knowledge, skills, and capacities that enable students to flourish. Although the center is new, our goal is to serve as the nucleus that engages students, alumni, staff, and faculty in conversations that foster diversity, cultural sensitivity, inclusivity, and student success. Such conversations will afford students opportunities for self-assessment in order to achieve academic success, professional and personal development, leadership development, and collaborative work.

Always remember, your success is our primary goal.
