Jack Scott, Carl Cohn to lead Feb. 19 discussion on educational politics in California

Thursday, February 14, 2013

Two top experts in government education policy will lead a discussion at Claremont Graduate University (CGU) on Educational Politics in California on Feb. 19.

The talk will feature Scholar in Residence Jack Scott and Professor Carl Cohn, both from CGU's School of Educational Studies.

It will take place at 7:30 p.m. in CGU's Albrecht Auditorium, 925 N. Dartmouth Ave. It is free and open to the public.

Scott came to Claremont Graduate University last year after serving more than three years as chancellor of the California Community Colleges.

As the top official of the nation’s largest system of higher education, he led the 112 colleges through sweeping reforms that made them more responsive to the needs of students and the economy.

Prior to assuming the chancellor's position, Scott served in the California Senate from 2000 to 2008. He was named Legislator of the Year by the California Federation of Teachers, Association of California Community College Administrators, and California State University. He worked as president of Pasadena City College from 1987-95 and Cypress College from 1978-87.

Cohn's distinguished career in education has spanned more than 30 years. In 2011, California Governor Jerry Brown appointed him to the state Board of Education, where he continues to serve.

He has worked as a teacher, counselor, professor, superintendent, and federal court monitor. He served as superintendent of the Long Beach Unified School District in California from 1992–2002. During his tenure, the district achieved record attendance, the lowest rate of suspension in a decade, decreases in student failure and dropout rates, and an increase in the number of students taking college preparatory classes.

He currently serves as co-director of CGU's Urban Leadership Program.

The event featuring Scott and Cohn is the first in a series of annual lectures named in honor of Professor Emeritus John Regan. The John Regan Lectures, organized by CGU's School of Educational Studies, will bring together students, faculty, and the public to hear notable visiting authorities speak on significant topics in the field of education, international education, educational policy, communication, and related areas.
