The Preparing Future Faculty program can help you excel as a scholar-educator and prepare for a career in academia. The PFF program offers opportunities to be part of a national professional learning community that seeks to enhance faculty excellence. Drawing from both teaching practice and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, PFF offers courses, workshops, and consultations in teaching and learning design, technology integration in scholarship and teaching, as well as career preparation. Along the way, you can earn a professional development certificate and build a strong teaching portfolio.
Five Ways Use PFF
1. Attend Workshops
All PFF workshops are open to all CGU students and alumni. Even if you do not want a PFF certificate, you can take as many workshops as you would like. Everyone can benefit from the topics covered by the workshops.
2. Earn a PFF Graduate Certificate
To earn a certificate you must register with PFF and complete the program requirements. You can complete the requirements on you own time schedule since there is no time limit on earning the certificate. You can also take the PFF course for no credit, and no cost, to complete all the requirements for the certificate.
3. Add PFF to Your Transcript & Earn a Certificate
Take the PFF course for credit to have it placed on your transcript and earn a PFF Graduate Certificate.
4. In-Person and On-Line Consultations
As you work on developing teaching documents such as syllabi, student learning outcomes, assessment rubrics, lesson plans, and teaching philosophy statements for your portfolio, you can make appointments with the PFF Director. Appointments can be in-person at the PFF Office, or through Skype. Each appointment lasts 50 minutes. After initial discussion, you may also submit your teaching documents for online review by attaching it to an email to email@example.com. Please specify your concerns in order to receive the most focused feedback.
5. Teaching Clinics
Teaching Clinics offer students a peer-based process of developing and presenting teaching activities in their subject area. You can develop and test activities and lesson plans for classes you are currently teaching, or anticipate teaching. You can also use the peer-review process to develop syllabi, assessment methods and rubrics, student learning outcomes, and teaching philosophy statements. You can also form or join a Teaching Clinic to fulfil the Teaching Observation requirements for the certificate. History of PFF
The Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) program was a national initiative that launched in 1993 by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) and the Council of Graduate Schools (CGU). The aim of this initiative was to transform the ways in which graduate students prepared for careers as faculty members in institutes of higher education. Since the inception of PFF programs around the nation, this mission has become even more urgent. As higher education landscapes radically change, faculty face new challenges and opportunities both as scholars and educators. PFF programs play a critical role in helping graduate students prepare for productive and balanced faculty lives of ethical and excellent scholarly practice, teaching, and service.
