Health Insurance
The information below is for ALL ENROLLED Students;
International Students, please review guidelines specific to you here. |
- CGU Insurance can be billed directly onto your tuition statement at the rates listed below.
- Domestic students must request to be added to the plan by contacting admiss@cgu.edu with their request by the end of the add/drop period.
- International students are automatically enrolled in CGU insurance.
- Students on a Medical Leave of Absence who are enrolled in the plan will continue to remain in the plan for that semester. If you will be on a leave of absence and wish not to be covered during that semester, you must opt out of the plan by following the instructions below.
- To obtain 100% bill coverage, you must be treated at the Student Health Center. If they are unable to assist you they will refer you to see another in-network doctor. You must have the referral to obtain 90% coverage from a network provider.
- If you do not obtain a referral to see an outside doctor, you will be responsible for your deductible and coverage will be at 70% only.
- This does not apply in emergency situations or when Student Health is closed; these situations qualify for 90% coverage.
- Click here or to visit the insurance company's website and obtain an insurance brochure (also available in the Student Affairs lobby) and/or to view the current plan. The Quick Reference Guide in the back of the insurance brochure has many helpful quick tips for using the insurance. In addition, please feel free to visit our Frequently Asked Questions page for additional guidance.
CGU Dependent Coverage. You may also purchase CGU health insurance for your dependents.
Note to International Students: immigration law requires that international dependents be covered while in the US.
- You can only insure dependents in the CGU plan if you are also insured through CGU.
- Dependent rates are paid directly to the insurance company (as opposed to student insurance which is reflected on your CGU bill) at the rates listed below. Dependents may be added at any point in the semester, provided they are insured within 30 days of their arrival to the US (i.e. in the case of international students), but will be charged for the entire semester rate.

Opting Out of CGU Insurance: Choosing an Independent Insurance Provider
You may opt out of CGU insurance until the end of CGU's add/drop period. Remember, partial semester coverage is unavailable so please plan ahead for your insurance needs. International students will need to submit proof of alternate health coverage to the International Office.
All Claremont Graduate University students are required to have health insurance. Immigration policy requires that all international students be covered by an insurance policy. There are 2 ways to satisfy these institutional and governmental rules:
1. Purchase CGU Health Insurance
2. Purchase and provide proof of health insurance from an independent provider.
IMPORTANT: International students must always have coverage. If your personal insurance will expire mid-way through the semester, you should either extend the coverage or purchase CGU insurance at the start of the semester. Partial semester coverage is unavailable so please plan ahead.
You must opt into or out of CGU insurance by the end of CGU's add/drop period. To opt out of the Spring insurance, you must also show coverage for the summer period (and will need to contact your insurance company to insure you can obtain a refund for any portion unused). No exceptions will be made to these policies. Please review the information below for specific information on CGU's insurance plan and policy.
You will be asked to show proof of health insurance every semester to opt out of CGU insurance. To provide proof, you will need to mail or fax a copy of your insurance card/policy to the International Staff or stop by the International Office to submit proof prior to registering for classes with your department. Please note: an insurance hold preventing your registration will be placed on your account until proof is rendered.
