Regional fire and police agencies will conduct an active shooter drill at Scripps College on Wednesday, January 16 through Friday, January 18, between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. The focal point of the drill will be the Scripps Performing Arts Center (Garrison Theater) at the NE corner of 10th Street and Dartmouth Avenue.
The drill is designed to allow emergency crews to practice how to respond to a shooting incident. This is a real world simulation with SWAT teams, helicopters, role-playing victims, loud siren noises, etc., across multiple points of the Claremont Colleges. CGU is not a participant in this drill, but our properties are immediately adjacent to the exercise and will be affected.
This is an important drill and the cooperation of the CGU community is critical. The university will provide updated information about the drill via digital signage and e-mail. Members of the campus community should follow any special instructions during the drill and be aware that traffic and parking restrictions will be in place all three days between 7 and 11 a.m.
No parking will be permitted on Dartmouth Avenue from 9th to 12th streets during the drill hours on these three days as these streets will be utilized by fire and ambulance companies as a staging area. The Scripps College parking lot at the corner of Dartmouth Avenue and 11th Street (Steele Building) as well as the small lot north of Garrison Theater will be used by emergency personnel, media, and observers.
Other parking restrictions include no parking on Columbia Avenue between 9:30 a.m. and noon, and no parking on 10th and 11th streets (between Columbia and Dartmouth) from 7 a.m. to noon. The McAlister Center parking lot will be closed each morning.
On each day of the three-day drill, local officials and media will be observing activities. All of these individuals will have credentials to establish their identity and prescribed location.
