Arts Management Director Laura Zucker to represent Los Angeles at World Cities Culture Summit

Monday, November 11, 2013

Laura Zucker, director of Claremont Graduate University's Arts Management program, will represent the city of Los Angeles at the World Cities Culture Summit in Instanbul, Turkey.

Laura ZuckerThe summit brings together senior officials responsible for developing cultural policy in 22 major cities around the world. These arts leaders will discuss the critical role that culture plays in city life, socially, economically, and developmentally.

Zucker is eager to bring lessons from the summit back to CGU's Arts Management students. But more significantly, she is taking with her ideas from her students to help shape discussions in Instanbul.

"I asked our Arts Management students and alumni what I should ask these world cultural leaders and they gave me an arsenal of topics to discuss, including how artists of different cultures can participate in equitable collaborations that produce excellent art and engage the community," Zucker said.

In addition to directing CGU's Arts Management Program, Zucker serves as executive director of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, a position she has held since 1992. The Arts Commission provides leadership in cultural services of all disciplines for the largest county in the United States, encompassing 88 municipalities.

This is the second World Cities Culture Summit. The previous occurred in London last year. This year's topic is "A new cultural agenda: how can world city leaders unleash the full potential of culture?''

Large cities face many daunting challenges - health, transport infrastructure, housing, and unemployment - which can lead to culture being overlooked. Increasing globalization, the impact of emerging economies, and the ongoing effects of the economic downturn are forcing city leaders to develop new strategies to support the conditions in which artists and cultural production, as well as experiences, are able to thrive.

The summit takes place Nov. 13-15.
