Certificate in Women's and Gender Studies
The Women's and Gender Studies Certificate is available to students enrolled in a CGU degree program as well as students who have completed a Bachelor's degree and wish to enroll at CGU as a certificate status student to earn the WGS certificate (see below for application procedures). The program is designed to engage students in an interdisciplinary field of study which analyzes the phenomenon of gender through a lens of intersectionality, including race, class, sexuality, and location. The focus on interdisciplinary studies also allows students to study the significance of gender theory, research, and practice, while understanding "gender" as a social construction referring to feminities and masculinities.
The certificate requirement is the completion of Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies (WGS 301) plus three elective courses relevant to Women's and Gender Studies. Electives may be selected from the CGU class schedule or from curricular offerings from the Intercollegiate Department of Women's Studies of The Claremont Colleges; always with the prior approval of the director of the program and your faculty advisor.
Application and Enrollment Procedures
Students enrolled in a CGU degree program may apply for the WGS certificate program by completing the Certificate/Degree Program Change Form and submitting it to Susan Hampson in the School of Arts and Humanities office.
Students who are not currently enrolled in a CGU degree program, but have a Bachelor's degree and wish to earn the WGS certificate must submit a CGU application to the Office of Admissions.
If the student is enrolled in a degree program at CGU, then all courses may count toward both the degree program and the Women's and Gender Studies Certificate, with the approval of an academic advisor.
Completing and Receiving the Certificate
Once students have completed all of the requirements they must fill out an Intent to Receive a Degree form and the Master's Degree - or - Certificate Final Approval form to receive the certificate. Links to both forms can be found at: http://www.cgu.edu/pages/179.asp.
