Psychology Prof. William Crano to spend summer sharing drug-use prevention research worldwide

Claremont Graduate University (CGU) Psychology Professor William Crano, one of the world’s leading authorities on drug prevention, is taking his research to the international stage. This summer, he is traveling the globe to participate in workshops and presentations to share recent research and explore effective policies.

His first stop is in Sri Lanka where he will work with the Colombo Plan for Cooperative Economic and Social Development in Asia and the Pacific a regional intergovernmental effort to further the economic and social development in countries from Africa to North America.

Crano worked with the Colombo Plan in 2013 to develop a universal drug-use prevention curriculum. In July he will help train more than 500 prevention personnel from members of the Colombo Plan nations and other African countries.

From Sri Lanka Crano will head to Dubai where he will present at the 11th International Conference on Issues in Drug Control. This annual conference is co-organized by the Dubai Police force and the United Nations’ Office of Drugs and Crime. Crano will present on the role of media in addressing diversion and abuse of controlled substances and prescription drugs. He’ll also help facilitate a workshop session on best practices for abuse prevention. Next Crano will present in London at a special conference titled “Emerging Methods in Addiction Research” sponsored by the European Association of Social Psychology. This small meeting hosted at South Bank University will focus on the ability of new technologies to enhance the quality of research in addictive behavior. New technology has allowed researchers to gather more valid addictive behavior data by moving away from self-report research methodology. The conference will bring international addiction researchers together to share research practices and exchange ideas for further development. Finally Crano will travel to Bangkok for the first meeting of the International Society for Substance Use Professionals where he will present on the use of media in substance abuse prevention. Crano a fellow of the American Psychological Association and Association for Psychological Science has been a NATO Senior Scientist a Fulbright Fellow to Brazil and a liaison scientist in the behavioral sciences for the Office of Naval Research London. He also has served as the chair of the Executive Committee for the Society of Experimental Social Psychology and as director of the Program in Social Psychology at National Science Foundation.
