History: Forum & Happy Hour

Join Dr. Nishani Frazier, Professor of History and Director of Public History at North Carolina State University speaking on “Who Got the Burial Policy: Constructing an African American Grave Protection Act.” All History faculty will be in attendance so this event will be a good chance for folks to meet us and other History students.

Talk abstract: Suddenly, bodies were falling out the sky. In one year at North Carolina State University, the public history program was working with 10 groups in the region related to endangered African American burial sites. However, students and faculty soon realized what scores of other activists and scholars of Black death studies already knew. African Americans needed a burial policy- a literal and figurative insurance against destruction and abuse of Black remains. This discussion will review local efforts to address Black grave abuses, the difficulties associated Black burial documentation, and policy guidelines that empower Black communities to protect the gone and forgotten.

Following the forum, we will be hosting a happy hour in the SAH house backyard!
