Educational Studies Prof. Deborah Deutsch Smith to be honored by Council for Exceptional Children
School of Educational Studies Professor Deborah Deutsch Smith, a leading figure in special and inclusive education, will receive the 2015 TED/Pearson Excellence in Teacher Education Award from the Council for Exceptional Children, the world’s largest advocacy organization for students with exceptionalities.
The council will honor her at its annual convention in San Diego, April 8-11.
The Excellence in Teacher Education Award is presented by TED and Pearson Publishing to an individual who has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to special education teacher education, preparation of future leaders, or leadership in scholarly work and legislative advocacy.
Smith is the director of IRIS at CGU, which in partnership with Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, works to improve education outcomes for all children, especially those with disabilities, through the use of effective evidence-based practices and interventions.
She has authored 12 major textbooks and directed major research projects that have received more than $41 million in funding.
