Applied Women’s Studies Program sponsors March 23 talk on masculinity by Michael Kimmel
Michael Kimmel, Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at Stony Brook University, will visit the Claremont Colleges on March 23 to discuss the anger felt by some white men in America.
The talk, co-sponsored by Claremont Graduate University’s Applied Women’s Studies Program, will take place at 4:15 p.m. at Balch Auditorium on the Scripps College campus. It is free and open to the public.
Kimmel will discuss why some American men seem so angry, and the different groups that organize and express that anger. They range from men’s rights groups to men who become violent in their workplaces to political extremists.
Kimmelis one of the world’s leading experts on men and masculinities. Among his many books are Manhood in America, Angry White Men, The Politics of Manhood, The Gendered Society, and the best seller Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men. With funding from the MacArthur Foundation, he founded the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities at Stony Brook in 2013.
